Hi GMA Family! Moving to a new place is an incredible adventure, but we know it can also feel a bit overwhelming. Whether you’ve just arrived in Hobart or are settling into life in the North West, feeling empowered and secure is the first step to truly belonging.
At GMA, we’re all about building a supportive community. That’s why today we’re sharing three essential organizations that are here to have your back as you build your new life in Tasmania.
1. Standing Tall at Work: Unions Tasmania
Did you know that in Australia, you have a right to a fair and safe workplace regardless of your background? Unions Tasmania is the leading voice for workers in our state. They believe that when we work together, we can secure better wages and safer conditions for everyone. Think of them as a collective "friend" who ensures your voice is heard by employers.
2. Protection for Migrant Workers: The Migrant Work Rights Hub
If you are here on a temporary visa, the Migrant Work Rights Hub (an initiative by Unions Tasmania) is a resource you need to know. Sometimes, newcomers worry that speaking up about unfair pay or unsafe conditions might affect their visa—but the Hub is here to tell you that your rights don't disappear because of your visa.
What they do: Help you understand your pay and entitlements.
The "Safe" Factor: They can help you report exploitation safely, using new laws that protect your visa status if you've been mistreated.
3. Peace of Mind at Home: Tenants’ Union of Tasmania
Finding a place to live is a top priority, but navigating rental laws can be tricky. The Tenants’ Union of Tasmania provides free, expert legal advice to help you feel secure in your home. Whether it’s a question about your bond, a repair that isn’t getting fixed, or just understanding your lease, their team of solicitors and advocates are there to help. They even offer face-to-face advice in Hobart and by appointment in the North and North West.
Our "Politely Opinionated" Take: You Belong Here
At GMA, we believe diversity is a strength, but it shouldn't make you a target for unfair treatment. We advocate for every multicultural individual to feel resilient and informed. Reaching out for advice isn't just about solving a problem; it's about claiming your place in our inclusive society.
